Virtuix hooks up Oculus Rift to its Omni treadmill, shows off 'True VR' (video)

Sure, Omni-directional treadmills are nothing new, but Virtuix's take is worth a mention now that its been shown off working in conjunction with the Oculus Rift. The company's been posting videos of its Omni treadmill working with Kinect for months, but last Thursday it upped the ante by adding in the Rift in what looks to be an intense VR session of Team Fortress 2 -- officialy one-upping SixSenses Razer Hydra demo for the VR headset. The company's been working on this unit as an affordable solution for households, aiming to eventually try for funding via Kickstarter. Catch the video demo after the break and try resist throwing money at the screen in an attempt to get in on the action early.

Tennessee treasurer pushes Congress to keep municipal bonds tax ...

NASHVILLE ?Tennessee?s David Lillard is among 42 of the nation?s state treasurers asking Congress not to alter the tax-exempt status of municipal bonds, saying changes could drive up borrowing costs and force state and local governments to raise taxes.

There has been talk in Washington about eliminating or capping the tax exemption to help federal officials deal with soaring debt.

Tax-exempt bonds are ?the primary tool that state and local governments use to finance highways, bridges, transit systems, airports, water and wastewater systems, schools, higher education facilities, and many other projects,? the National Association of State Treasurers wrote Monday to the chairmen of the U.S. House and Senate ways and means committees.

?Tax-exempt municipal bonds provide a mechanism for bringing private capital to those public projects, while saving an average of 25 to 30 percent on interest costs compared to taxable bonds,? the treasurers? letter stated.

Exempting bonds from taxes means investors will accept lower interest rates, saving local governments money, the letter stated.

It revealed a city that, while shaken by the violence, hasn?t been knocked off its feet.

?Your resolve is the greatest rebuke to whoever committed this heinous act,? said President Obama, who flew with the First Lady to Boston to attend the event alongside local leaders. ?If they sought to intimidate us, to terrorize us, to shake us from ? the values that make us who we are, as Americans ? well, it should be pretty clear by now that they picked the wrong city to do it.?

Despite the somber occasion, Bostonians were in a mood to greet that sentiment with loud applause. And they rallied similarly behind the president when he tapped into the city?s passion for sports, predicting that crowds would again line Boylston Street for future marathons and post-championship parades.

The appearance by the president brought needed encouragement to the city, as did the prayers offered by ministers and the remarks from others, including Mayor Thomas Menino and Gov. Deval Patrick.

But the event at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston?s South End also showed Mr. Obama and other leaders drawing strength from this city and its residents.

?You?ve shown us, Boston, that in the face of evil, Americans will lift up what?s good,? Obama said. ?In the face of cruelty, we will choose compassion.?In the face of those who would visit death upon innocents, we will choose to save and to comfort and to heal.?We?ll choose friendship. We?ll choose love.?

In tough times, those qualities heal, and they?ve been on display in Boston since Monday in everything from direct care for victims to small acts of kindness, such as sharing hugs with friends or stopping to hold a door for a stranger.

Bostonians have also been joining together at a range of prayer meetings. The service Obama attended Thursday, an interfaith event with various dignitaries on view and overflow crowds out in the street, was the biggest.

?Any time you have this kind of trauma ? it?s important to have a way for everybody to get together,? said Byron Rushing, a representative in the statehouse who attended the meeting.

It is an important moment, he said, for a city of great diversity that has not always been known for cohesiveness, to preserve and build on a hard-won unity.

?We have worked very hard to be a city for everybody,? he said.

The meeting drew together people of all faiths and backgrounds ? and it drew a much larger crowd than could fit in the roughly 2,000-seat cathedral.

While special access was provided for bombing victims and their families, others had to line up early in the morning for a chance to attend.

Monica Etzel, who was visiting from Salt Lake City, said Boston was slow and quiet, different than she remembered from her previous visits.??Boston is a grieving city,? she said as she waited to attend the 11 a.m. event. ?The mood is somber, but people are being so kind.?

Yahoo posts flat Q1 revenue on declining display ad sales

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Yahoo Inc's first quarter revenue fell short of Wall Street targets and its display advertising business experienced declining sales for the second quarter in a row, sending the Internet company's shares down about 4 percent.

Yahoo's stock, which had surged more than 50 percent since Chief Executive Marissa Mayer took the helm in July, fell to $22.90 in after-hours trading on Tuesday.

"People were disappointed by the display advertising because that's Yahoo's key business," said Sameet Sinha, an analyst at B. Riley Caris.

Yahoo also projected net revenue for the second quarter of $1.06 billion to $1.09 billion in a presentation posted on its website after its earnings release on Tuesday. That was below the average analyst expectation of $1.11 billion in second quarter net revenue, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Mayer, a former Google executive, is trying to revitalize Yahoo's business. While Yahoo was once among the Internet industry's most powerful companies, it has lost its appeal among consumers and advertisers to rivals such as Google Inc and Facebook Inc .

Mayer has said that building better online products that entice consumers to spend more time on Yahoo properties, and developing new services for smartphones and other mobile devices, are key to turning the company around.

Net revenue, which excludes fees shared with partner websites, was $1.07 billion in the first quarter, roughly flat from the year-ago period, according to Yahoo.

Yahoo's net revenue was at the low-end of the $1.07 billion to $1.1 billion it forecast in January, in what was the first financial outlook that Yahoo offered since Mayer became CEO. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S on average expected net revenue of $1.1 billion.

Yahoo said it earned $390 million, or 35 cents a share in the first three months of the year, compared to $286 million, or 23 cents in first quarter of 2012.

Revenue from display ads fell 11 percent year-on-year, excluding certain items. Search advertising revenue rose 6 percent year-on-year on an adjusted basis.

BOSTON (AP) ? In what could be major break in the Boston Marathon case, investigators are on the hunt for a man seen in a department store surveillance video dropping off a bag at the site of the bombings, a local politician said Wednesday.

Separately, a law enforcement official confirmed that authorities have found an image of a potential suspect but don't know his name.

The development ? less than 48 hours after the attack, which left three people dead and more than 170 wounded ? marked a possible turning point in a case that has investigators analyzing photos and videos frame by frame for clues to who carried out the twin bombings and why.

City Council President Stephen Murphy, who said he was briefed by Boston police, said investigators saw the image on surveillance footage they got from a department store near the finish line and matched the findings with witness descriptions of someone leaving the scene.

"I know it's very active and very fluid right now ? that they are on the chase," Murphy said. He added: "They may be on the verge of arresting someone, and that's good."

The bombs were crudely fashioned from ordinary kitchen pressure cookers packed with explosives, nails and ball bearings, investigators and others close to the case said. Investigators suspect the devices were then hidden in black duffel bags and left on the ground.

As a result, they were looking for images of someone lugging a dark, heavy bag.

One department store video "has confirmed that a suspect is seen dropping a bag near the point of the second explosion and heading off," Murphy said.

A law enforcement official who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity confirmed only that investigators had an image of a potential suspect whose name was not known to them and who had not been questioned.

Several media outlets reported that a suspect had been identified from surveillance video taken at a Lord & Taylor department store between the sites of the bomb blasts.

The turn of events came with Boston in a state of high excitement over conflicting reports of a breakthrough.

A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation told the AP around midday that a suspect was in custody. The official, who was not authorized to divulge details of the investigation and spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the suspect was expected in federal court. But the FBI and the U.S. attorney's office in Boston said no arrests had been made.

By nightfall, there was no evidence anyone was in custody. No one was taken to court. The law enforcement official, who had affirmed there was a suspect in custody even after federal officials denied it, was unable to obtain any further information or explanation.

At least 14 bombing victims, including three children, remained in critical condition. Dozens of victims have been released from hospitals, and officials at three hospitals that treated some of the most seriously injured said they expected all their remaining patients to survive. A 2-year-old boy with a head injury was improving and might go home Thursday, Boston Children's Hospital said.

On Wednesday, investigators in white jumpsuits fanned out across the streets, rooftops and awnings around the blast site in search of clues. They picked through trash cans, plastic cup sleeves and discarded sports drink dispensers.

Boston remained under a heavy security presence, and some people admitted they were nervous about moving about in public spaces.

Tyler King, a personal trainer from Attleboro who works in Boston, said four of five clients canceled on him a day earlier because they were worried about venturing into the city. He took the train in, but "I kind of kept my head on a swivel."

Kenya Nadry, a website designer, took her 5-year-old nephew to a playground.

"There's still some sense of fear, but I feel like Boston's resilient," she said. "The fine men in blue will take care of a lot of it."

Police were stationed on street corners across downtown Boston, while National Guardsmen set up tents on the Boston Common and stationed tactical vehicles.

Dr. Horacio Hojman, associate chief of trauma at Tufts Medical Center, said patients were in surprisingly good spirits when they were brought in.

"Despite what they witnessed, despite what they suffered, despite many of them having life-threatening injuries, their spirits were not broken," he said. "And I think that should probably be the message for all of us ? that this horrible act of terror will not bring us down."

President Barack Obama and his challenger in the last election, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, planned to visit Boston on Thursday to attend a service honoring the victims.

Obama signed an emergency declaration for Massachusetts on Wednesday and ordered federal aid to supplement the local response to the bombings.

The blasts killed 8-year-old Martin Richard, of Boston, and 29-year-old Krystle Campbell, of Medford. The Shenyang Evening News, a state-run Chinese newspaper, identified the third victim as Lu Lingzi, a graduate student at Boston University.
